The Towers of the Alhambra Posted: 08 May 2011 11:56 PM PDT The exhibition, entitled “The Towers of the Alhambra”, is the work of artist Cristóbal Gabarrón, painter, sculptor and mural-creator, and it consolidates L’Umbracle as a Promenade of Art, with areas that are accessible to the public free of charge. This new exhibition joins all the other art installations that can be visited at the City of Arts and Sciences, including sculptures by Ripollés, also at L’Umbracle, and the ‘Scientists and their Art’ exhibition at the Science Museum, which is currently showing a collection of pieces by Antonio Sacramento. The City of Arts and Sciences, one of the largest culture and science complexes in existence, in this way brings together science, nature and art in a single space. ‘The Towers of the Alhambra’, is a free exhibition of sixteen large-scale sculptures up to six metres tall, with which the artist Cristóbal Gabarrón pays homage to this famous Arab fort and palace, a symbol of tolerance and different cultures living together in harmony. The spectacular sculpture entitled ‘Kronos’ is also on display. The Towers (Comares, Infantas [Princesses], Damas [Ladies], Justicia [Justice], Rauda [Swift], Cautiva [Captive], Abu I Hayyay, Armas [Weapons], Vela [Sail], Picos [Peaks], Agua [Water], 7 suelos [7 Floors], Mihrab, Quebrada [Ravine], Bermejas [Redheads] and Cadí) are made of polychrome-painted fibreglass. In a space measuring 3,000 square metres under the projecting structure of L’Umbracle, the skyline of the towers traces its line, in a juxtaposition of silhouettes, watchtowers and Mediterranean colours that celebrate intercultural harmony encapsulated in the symbolic Alhambra.
