| The Oceanogrfic (Aquarium) to hold a lecture on "The Spanish Navy: 500 years sailing the seas" Posted: 15 May 2011 04:20 PM PDT The Oceanogràfic at the City of Arts and Sciences is to hold a lecture entitled “The Spanish Navy: 500 years sailing the seas” today, May 17th, as part of the series Tuesdays at the Oceanogràfic. Spanish seafarers have carried out numerous explorations that have also brought scientific knowledge and helped to discover and open up new shipping routes. Francisco José González, Technical Director of the Library and Historical Archives of the Spanish Navy’s Royal Institute and Observatory will take listeners through five hundred years of Spanish seafaring, with special reference to other sea voyages that have made history. Tuesdays at the Oceanogràfic This event, “The Spanish Navy: 500 years sailing the seas” forms part of the seventh edition of the lecture series entitled Tuesdays at the Oceanogràfic. This year the central theme is exploration of the oceans, to link up with the Malaspina science research project. 2010 is the 200th anniversary of the death of Alejandro Malaspina, who led a scientific exploration around the world from 1789 to 1794. With this expedition as its context, Spain launched the Malaspina Expedition 2010, the first circumnavigation of the globe, taking in every sea and ocean on the planet. Because of this, this year’s lecture series includes a sequence of talks that look at exploration of the world’s oceans, both from a historical point of view (the Malaspina expedition of 1785) and from today’s perspective (the Malaspina expedition of 2010), analysing how exploration of the oceans has evolved and the impact that anthropogenic agents are having on marine biodiversity. The Oceanogràfic uses this series of lectures to look at various topics. In past years, it has covered issues such as biodiversity, both from a global perspective and in a more specialist sense with a look at an endangered species like sharks, the linkages between the oceans and climate change, and the deep ocean. The dynamics that govern the oceans, fishing grounds and their environmental impacts and topics such as the polar seas and their environments are some of the other fields that have been discussed in the Tuesdays at the Oceanogràfic lectures. |
