The Ant's Nest

Posted: 18 Mar 2011 02:45 AM PDT

In this exhibition the habitat of leaf-cutting ants is recreated with aqua terrariums where we can watch the ants on several islands semi  flooded with fine twigs. Small fishes and tropical plants are observed in the water. There are also underground tunnels where the ants grow the fungus and the underground activity of this kind of large ants, with queen ants that can reach about 2,5 cm in length.

Through the front view, visitors will observe how Atta ants works. All leaf-cutters feed on a fungus that they themselves grow within their nests. The fungus feeds on leaves that the ants cut away and carry into the nest. The ants must prune away the waste material and tranport the refuse to the outside or to some other underground chamber.

The queen is the most important ant in the colony . She is much larger than the others ; she can live for as fifteen to twenty years and she can lay up to one hundred and fifty million eggs in her life-time.
