| Today astronomy conference 'Beyond Neptune' Posted: 16 Oct 2011 06:53 PM PDT Today 18th October, 7.30pm, at the Red Sea Auditorium (Oceanogràfic) will take place 'Beyond Neptune' talk, given by Adriano Campo, PhD in Physics from the University of Valencia. The activity, free upon registration, is part of the Astronomy series organized for the eighth year running. In 1992 the first trans-Neptunian object was discovered except Pluto and its moon Charon. This important finding represented a true revolution in our understanding of the solar system, while it was given an explanation to the mystery of Pluto: a strange little planet that seemed to be where he should not, a world of rock and ice in the middle realm of the giant planets gaseous. The new member of the solar system turned out to be the first in a long list of bodies classified as trans-Neptunian objects, that is objects whose orbit is located partially or entirely beyond the orbit of Neptune. Thus, Pluto was not alone anymore, but very well accompanied by a large family of similar bodies. The detection of more than one trans-Neptunian objects, some of them larger than Pluto, forced even the International Astronomical Union to reconsider the definition of the term planet. Under the guidance of Dr. Adriano Campo, the public will travel the farthest regions of the solar system and will discover how this exciting scientific history has changed our view about this System. |
