| Posted: 13 Oct 2011 11:12 PM PDT The Oceanogràfic of the City of Arts and Sciences celebrates for the fifth year running, European Shark Week, which takes place from tomorrow, 15th Saturday, to Sunday, 23th October. European Shark Week, organised by the Shark Alliance, and which is presented this year under the motto: "Make the PUSH to protect Europe's sharks", is held in October in aquariums all over Europe in order to inform and raise awareness the status of these animals, while supporting all initiatives aimed at conservation. The Oceanogràfic have scheduled various special activities in different locations of their installations to inform about the status of sharks in European waters and to ask EU fisheries ministers to strength the rules to establish a total ban on fins shark cut at sea, setting limits based on scientific advice and the precautionary principle. and protection of threatened sharks and rays species. Oceanogràfic’s proposals include daily visits to the technical area of the Oceans section (“Face to face with sharks”), for groups of up to 15 people at 11 hours, 14 hours and 16 hours. The public has the opportunity to know the kitchen and installing walkways and walkways of the sharks’ installations. These visits cost 4 euros per person, which will be donated entirely to projects about the shark conservation. Visitors can also play to flip a coin to the model of the head of a shark, allocating this money to a project just for the welfare of this species. Also, bio-educational exhibits will include previous informative talks that will be given in the Dolphinarium about the aim of this campaign. In addition, every day at 1p.m. will be given a storytelling sessions to learn the story of "Dani has no fear of sharks," and signatures will be collected in different places of the Oceanogràfic in order to claim the protection and conservation of sharks. During European Shark Week, 'Oceans’ section will show a large banner and posters will be introduced in several aquariums in the park to encourage the public to reflect on the plight of these animals, while will be launching informational messages by P.A system. The program also includes a talk, to be held on 21st October at 1.15 p.m. in the 'Red Sea' tower, so that the public can ask the aquarists that deal with the sharks on their daily work with these animals. On the other hand, a video will be showed in 'Red Sea' and 'Oceans' areas about finning practice as a threat to shark. This fins trade causes the death of up to 73 million sharks per year. |
