The 'React!' contest awards a video about the role of chemistry in the daily life of a student

The City of Arts and Sciences and the Spanish Royal Academy of Chemistry (RSEQ in Spanish) have awarded the job 'Chemistry for Life' by Lucia Matarredona Quiles and Marina Quiles, from the Colegio Sagrado Corazón Hermanos Maristas de Alicante, within the “React!” contest organized on the occasion of 2011 International Year of Chemistry with the aim of stimulating interest in this discipline.

Also, 'The chemistry and atmosphere, Problems and Solutions' by Paul Gallegos and Jordi Mora, from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, has won the university category of the “React!” contest.

Students Lucía Matarredona and Marina Quiles presented in the contest a video that shows the role of chemistry in daily routine of a high school freshman. Under this pretext, the paper explains how chemistry is part of every aspect of our lives, from medicines or detergents to the fabric of our clothing or fuel that makes working our engines.

In the University category, Pablo Gallegos and Jordi Mora presented "The chemistry and atmosphere. Problems and Solutions ", a work that is emerging in a laboratory at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, which aims to improve the storage of hydrogen for use as fuel, one of the main obstacles of this technology.

In addition, in the category University have been finalists the following jobs: ‘Quimicortos', which reviews various chemical concepts with humor; ‘Synthesis of Ammonia’, which reflects the chemical characteristics, its historical origins and various methods of synthesis, and finally 'The chemistry at the scene of the crime ' about the luminol, a molecule used for the detection of ‘blood’ in criminology. The three papers were presented by students of the Facultad de Química, Universidad de Valencia.

In the category of High School and vocational training of the Region of Valencia have been finalists ‘The sound and light with chemistry, please!’, by students of the IES Broch i Llop, from Vila-Real, which links relates chemical with fireworks, and ‘Exothermic reactions’ by students of IES Serra de Mariola (Muro de Alcoi). The work seeks the most appropriate chemical reaction to make a hand warmer for Sports Mountain.

With this competition, the City of Arts and Sciences is playing its part in the 2011 International Year of Chemistry, celebrating achievements in chemistry around the world and their contribution to the well-being of humanity.

The “React!” contest aims to encourage university students from all over Spain and sixth-form, vocational training and older secondary students from the Valencia Community region to make an audiovisual presentation (lasting up to 10 minutes) to describe a chemical process in an educational, creative and original way. Special attention is to be paid to those that have most clearly contributed to society's well-being and which are most illustrative and educational.

El Museo de las Ciencias, premio "UNESCO-Valldigna 2011"

La Organización para las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO), a través de su centro en Valencia, ha concedido el premio “UNESCO –Valldigna 2011” al Museo de las Ciencias “Príncipe Felipe” en el marco de la VII Multaqa de las tres culturas, el VII Foro Valldigna y la II Jornada de la Ciencia Joven, un evento que se ha celebrado este fin de semana en el Monasterio de Santa María de la Valldigna, en Simat de la Valldigna.

Al acto de clausura y entrega de premios, presidido por el conseller de Solidaridad y Ciudadanía, Rafael Blasco, asistieron el director de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Pedro García Ribot, y el director científico de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, Manuel Toharia. También estuvieron presentes el presidente de UNESCO España, Luis Ramallo, el presidente de la Fundación Cultura de Paz, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, y la representante de UNESCO París, Tania Fernández.

Un año más, el Foro y la Multaqa se han celebrado simultáneamente en el Real Monasterio de Santa Mª de la Valldigna y en esta ocasión, el lema elegido ha sido "La ciencia y el deporte, pasarelas de la paz". En este encuentro para el fomento de la diversidad cultural, en el que también se reconoció al jugador del FC Barcelona y de la Selección Española de Fútbol Andrés Iniesta, la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias ha participado con diversos talleres y animaciones científicas. Además, el domingo 19 de junio el autobús interactivo de la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias visitó Simat de Valldigna (imagen galería).
