Prepare your visit to the City of Arts and Sciences
What to do at the City of Arts and Sciences? From panoramic and architectural visits to combined tickets for admission to the entire complex. Consult the options for visiting the Science Museum, the opening times of the Hemisfèric and plan your visit to the Oceanogràfic. In addition, from 8:00 p.m., experience 'Oceanogràfic Nights.
The whole family can enjoy the special summer activities of the City of Arts and Sciences. Among the many fun activities on offer throughout the holiday period, visitors can savour adventure films on the giant curved screen of the Hemisfèric, travel back to the time of the dinosaurs in the Umbracle, experience science in surprising ways at the Science Museum or sink down into the underwater world of the Oceanogràfic.
Throughout summer, visitors to the Umbracle go back to prehistoric times as they walk through "Among Dinosaurs", among the very habitat in which these colossal creatures lived, while getting up close to 26 robotic dinosaurs with their wide range of movements and calls. Here, they will meet, among others, the 2.5-metre tall Stegosaurus, the Diplodocus with a length of 27 metres and the giant 14-metre Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Also in the Umbracle, visitors enjoy a Promenade of Art. This free access area offers visitors the chance to admire works of art such as sculptures of Jean Claude Farhi. A exhibition made up of eleven sculptures in total: 9 pieces in iron of ochre shades and a piece of Corten (weathering) steel covered in black, which adorn the Umbracle with their outlines in this space. One of the 11 sculptures is also to be found on the museum's Minor Street.
Fahri's exhibition will be sharing the Umbracle's balcony and promenade with the "Torres de la Alhambra" ("Towers of the Alhambra") by Cristóbal Gabarrón. This is a collection of sixteen monumental sculptures made of multi-coloured fibreglass that was inspired by the Moorish palace. It is also located in an area where the general public can enter freely.
Visitors can also enjoy the Garden of Astronomy in the Umbracle, where are located 12 different displays, among which are astronomic instruments, models and panels that help to explain to the public the basic principles of a science that goes way back to ancient times.
Within the Science Museum, the youngest members of the family have their own special space, where they can get to know the animal world, practice working as a member of a team as they share in the construction of a still-to-be-completed house and learn about both water and the human body. Here in "Kiddies Corner", younger children will have fun while, at the same time, their curiosity to continue learning is aroused.
Three of the several current exhibitions are "Science and Sport with Valencia Football Club", where, as visitors explore the club's history, they will discover how rapidly new sport-related technology has evolved; "Zero Gravity", which explains the phenomena caused by the sun, plus how giant space telescopes work and what they reveal; and "Marvel Superheroes", presenting the world of comics and revealing a range of scientific principles that lie behind such superheroes and their supernatural powers.
Summer Nights in the Oceanogràfic
Between 15 July and 31 August, there's a unique chance to visit the Oceanogràfic outside normal opening hours. From 10am to midnight, visitors can roam its facilities, pass through its aquariums and take in a night-time show in the Dolphinarium, complete with synchronized swimming, drumming and special illumination.
The Oceanogràfic also offers exciting experiences such as "Sleep with Sharks" and "Penguin Encounter". In the huge tank within the Oceans zone, with its 51 species and 1350 specimens, qualified, adventurous divers can plunge to "Sharks Encounter".
Also throughout the summer, the Hemisfèric's wide-screen IMAX cinema is showing such films as "Flying Monsters", about prehistoric giants that cruised the skies, and "Born to Be Wild", which recounts the bond between humans and animals and shows how the work of a select few has resulted in the rescue of endangered species.
